Accounts of Runs

Damon Rodwell - The Pixie Run - A onetime Grizzly winner's account of running the Southwest Coast path in three weeks (roughly a marathon a day). Very readable. Dave Mutter joined him around Branscombe. (Garry)

Damon Rodwell - The Southern Upland Shuffle - Not content with running marathons on multiple days Damon then did a double marathon a day for five days along the Southern Upland Way. (Garry)

Richard Askwith - Feet In The Clouds - Highly-acclaimed book about fell running. Gives the non-fell runner an idea of what and why. (Garry)

Neil Jamison, (ed.) - Running Through The Wall - Assorted articles by ultra runners. (Garry)

Don Kardong - Hills, Hawgs & Ho Chi Minh - Essays by an elite Anerican runner. Very readable. (Garry)

Bob Brown - The Road to Deca - Bob's autobiography of ten years of running, biking and swimming, culminating in fourth place in the world deca-ironman championships (24 mile swim, 1120 mile cycle, 262-mile run). His style is rather rough around the edges but he is very honest with his feelings which make it easy and compulsive reading. I was in tears at the end of it. You have got to read it to believe it - trust me! Incidentally, he ran the Seaton Half this year. (Garry)

Dean Karnazes - Ultramarathon Man - Personal and very readable account of Dean's journey into the world of ultras. Even better than The Road to Deca. (Garry)

Mike Cudahy - Wild Trails to Far Horizons -A running autobiography, including when he become the first person to run the 270-mile Pennine Way in under three days. (Garry)

Hugh Symonds - Running High - Hugh's account of running all the Munroes (Scottish mountains over 3,000' high) before continuing with the English, Welsh and Irish three thousanders and covering the whole lot in eighty days. (Garry)

Nutrition, Training, Sport Science, etc.

Anita Bean - The Complete Guide to Sports Nutrition - A good introduction to the subject. (Garry)

Dale & Cameron - The Contenders - How technology, nutrition, mind games, etc. separate the best from the rest. The book of the BBC TV series of a few years ago. (Garry)

Tim Noakes - Lore of Running - An extremely comprehensive tome by a sports science professional with a tremendous amount of detail. Some parts may be a bit dated (in my third edition, 1991) and some of the recommendations go against current wisdom as I perceive it but ultra running is covered in some detail. (Garry)

Pfitzinger & Douglas - Road Racing For Serious Runners - The one book on training that made a real difference to me. (Garry)

Andy Milroy (ed.) - Training for Ultras - A collection of articles by some of the best ultra athletes. (Garry)

Other.

Alan Sillitoe - The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner (Garry)

Roger Robinson - Running in Literature (Garry)

Mark Will-Weber (ed.) - The Quotable Runner - Many quotes by and about runners. (Garry)

Non-Running.

Some books which have influenced, or have parallels with, running.

Aron Ralstron - Between A Rock and A Hard Place - Aron's account of getting his arm wedged between a boulder and a canyon wall in the US a few years ago. A superb read (IMO). (Garry)

Joe Simpson - Touching the Void, This Game of Ghosts - Now here's a man who keeps getting himself into life-threatening situations in the mountains - he really should have died on at least three occasions! (Garry)

Apsley Cherry-Garrard - The Worst Journey in the World - Cherry-Garrard was the youngest member of Scott's south pole expedition. You would not believe what they went through - modern polar expeditions are nothing in comparison. Truly inspirational. (Garry)

Mike Stroud - Survival of the Fittest - Amazon's review says: From crossing Antarctica unaided with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, to participating in countless marathons and triathlons traversing deserts and glaciers, Stroud has become his own human guinea pig, testing the limits of human strength and survival in some of the most extreme and inhospitable environments of our planet ... Stroud sets out in Survival of the Fittest to tell us that we are all capable of the physical achievements usually left to realm of world class athletes. (Garry)

Chris Bonnington - Quest For Adventure - Bonnington has written about a wide range of "adventures", from single-handing yachting, through rowing across the Atlantic, crossing inhospitable regions, to climbing and caving. (Garry)
