Find your own way between checkpoints!
Local knowledge, navigational ability or someone to follow would be helpful!

Answer numeric questions at each checkpoint then add them together!
No prizes except for the satisfaction of a great morning's running!

Very low-key ... no markings, no marshals, no support!
You start, you try not to get lost, you do some sums, you finish!

Run whichever way you like - clockwise or clockunwise!
With pasty, tea & cakes afterwards!

Dirt cheap entry fee of a mere fiver (seven quid if unattached)!
More exclamation marks than any other race!

Right, that's quite enough levity, time to get serious. These are very low-key events as a bit of fun. Apart from one or two water stations and a phone number for emergency pickups you're on your own (or at the mercy of your friends) until you get back.

Minimum age 17. Entries accepted on the day if the limit of 200 runners hasn't been reached but may not get any food.

Start time slots every 15 minutes to avoid the chaos of previous events. Please indicate your expected start time on your entry form.

The list of checkpoints with grid refs is below. You can visit them in either direction. Choose the quickest, nicest, easiest or any other route you want as long as it's on public rights of way. There's not much between the obvious ones and this is meant to be fun.

Question sheets will be given out at the start so you can't cheat and find the answers beforehand!

Race rules: Held under Association of Running Clubs rules with some additions ... Report to the finish - Follow the Countryside Code - Take care on roads & lanes - Don't take it too seriously.

You can download the entry form and checkpoint map.

The long route visits all the checkpoints apart from 2a, the short route goes from 2 to 2a and then on to 8. You can run either way round.

The nicest route from 2 to 2a is down the right part of the track from the bend ignoring proper turns to left and right. There is only one point after about ¾m where the track just splits with both forks appearing to be "straight on" and you want the left, rising one. After another ¼m you reach a broken wooden gate across the track which you pass through then immediately turn left up a small path which takes you up to the stile at the edge of the wood. (This path is part of the Bovey Down Lightime route.)

Notes for non-locals

  • A footpath which isn't marked on the OS maps runs north-south past CP1 and the two ponds. Its northern end is at the lane T-junction and southern one on the lane just north of the "H" of "Holyford".
  • You can't get from CP2 to CP3 in anything like a direct route but have to go via either Jobbles Lane to the NE or the lane T-junction NW of Bovey Down to the SW. The entire stretch of wood in which CP2 lies is either formal access land or informally has tolerated access but you can't get in or out except at the ends or opposite Leacroft Farm, SW of CP2, and at 2a.

You can download the entry form and checkpoint map. Shute Beacon can be difficult to find if you don't know the woods so here's a detailed aerial photo.

The long route visits all checkpoints, the short one only 1,2 & 7. You can run either way round.
